Space weather health scales

WebNOAA uses a five-level system called the G-scale, to indicate the severity of both observed and predicted geomagnetic activity. This scale is used to give a quick indication of the severity of a geomagnetic storm. This scale ranges from G1 to G5, with G1 being the lowest level and G5 being the highest level. WebThis scale is called the Kp scale. The larger the index (7+) the more active the Earth's magnetic field becomes due to a storm from the sun. The smaller the index (1-2) the more quiet it is. Sometimes changes in the suns activity can cause big changes in Kp.

WebSolar activity associated with Space Weather can be divided into four main components: solar flares, coronal mass ejections, high-speed solar wind, and solar energetic particles. Solar flares impact Earth only when they occur on the side of the sun facing Earth. WebThe scales were developed for three event types: geomagnetic storms ( G-scale ), solar radiation storms ( S-scale ), and radio blackouts ( R-scale ). They are attributed a number from 1 to 5 based on severity: 1 = minor, 2 = moderate, 3 = strong, 4 = severe, and 5 = extreme. Space Weather Prediction Center, 2024: Geomagnetic storms.
